The vacancy is for a second Translator of European Portuguese mother tongue. The successful candidate will join a team – comprising two native-speaker Translators for each official Community language – which is responsible (under the coordination of the Division’s Heads of Section and with the support of the ECB’s Terminologist/Language Technologist team) for preparing the ECB’s official publications and other communications activities in all the official Community languages in close collaboration with the staff of the ESCB member national central banks.

Within the team, the successful candidate will have responsibility for preparing the ECB’s official publications and other communications activities in Portuguese in close collaboration with his/her fellow Portuguese Translator and with the linguistic staff and other experts at the Banco de Portugal.

The specific tasks of the successful candidate will be to translate the ECB’s (non-legal) texts into Portuguese, revise such translations, edit texts drafted in Portuguese, and proof-read texts destined for publication in Portuguese. The holder of this position will be required to perform occasional weekend work.

The successful performance of these tasks will involve:
- becoming integrated into the Portuguese unit and into the Translation Division, familiar with the established working procedures of the ECB’s Language Services, and an expert user of the computer-assisted translation tools used at the ECB.
- helping to develop the ECB’s existing database of multilingual ESCB-related terminology, in collaboration with the ECB’s Terminologist/Language Technologist team, by researching and compiling ESCB-related terminology in Portuguese from a multiplicity of sources and by expanding translation memories in Portuguese.
- collaborating closely with the linguistic staff and other experts at the Banco de Portugal.
- helping to maintain a pool of freelance translators to assist the ECB’s Portuguese unit with translation, revision, editing and proof-reading.
- helping to operate the Translation Division’s annual traineeship scheme by assisting with the selection and mentoring of Portuguese mother-tongue trainee translators.

Qualifications and experience:
- A perfect command of Portuguese, excellent English and a very good command of at least one other (current or prospective) official Community language. Knowledge of other (current or prospective) official Community languages would be an asset.
- An advanced university degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant subject, or proven ability to perform the tasks commensurate with such a formal academic qualification.
- A Master’s degree-level diploma in translation would be an advantage.
- At least two years’ proven professional experience as a Portuguese translator, preferably in the economic or financial field.
- A sound background knowledge of economics and finance.
- Familiarity with the ECB, other EU institutions, international organisations, the Banco de Portugal, and/or the financial sector would be an advantage.
- Strong interpersonal skills: in particular, good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment are very important, as are self-motivation and flexibility.
- Excellent PC skills and a very good knowledge of standard MS Office applications are essential.
- Familiarity with a terminology management package such as TRADOS MultiTerm and translation memory software such as TRADOS Translator’s Workbench would be an advantage.

Duration of contract / Closing date:
